Cox Advances To Stage II Of Q-School - Mean Green Sports

RANCHO MIRAGE, Calif. - Lauren Cox, who just wrapped up her Mean Green playing career in May as the most decorated golfer in program history, completed play on Sunday in the first stage of Symetra/LPGA Tour Q-School and advanced to Stage II by finishing T38th at 2-under par over the course of the four-day event. By moving past Day 3, Cox attained partial status on the Symetra Tour for the 2022 season.

Cox, who's still an amateur, shot a 73-69-72-72-286 with Mean Green head coach Michael Akers serving as her caddy, while playing three different courses - the Pete Dye and Dinah Shore courses at Mission Hills Country Club in Rancho Mirage and Shadow Ridge Golf Club in Palm Desert, California - over the four days. Only the top 165 golfers after Day 3 advanced to Day 4, and the top 95 and ties advanced to Stage II.

Stage II will take place Oct. 21-24 at Plantation Golf and Country Club in Venice, Florida. There will be no cuts and a minimum of the top 30 and ties will advance to the third and final stage, which is called Q-Series, in Alabama in December.

"I'm really happy with how I played this week and got the job done," Cox said. "Each day, I just tried to play my best and handle the mistakes well."

Cox, who will serve as a volunteer assistant coach for the Mean Green this coming season, made a trip to California in advance of the tournament and was able to play the courses to get a good feel for them, and she and Akers agreed that was a benefit come competition time.

"Lauren was well prepared," Akers said. "She flew to Palm Springs in July to play courses. She learned she needed to work on her hybrids and 3-wood because the courses played long."

Cox said having a familiar face by her side the entire time, as well as her parents walking along with her outside the ropes, was instrumental to her success.

"It was amazing to have Coach there this week," Cox said. "I couldn't have done it without him and my mom and dad."

Akers said he was proud to help Cox but also gained a lot of knowledge for current and future players who will play at Q-School in the future.

"It was incredible for me to be there, not only to help Lauren remain calm, but I gained knowledge for our players who will go play there in the future," Akers said. "I have watched my former players in the past at Q-School, but never been on the bag before."
