Justin Fields puts pressure on Matt Nagy after dazzling Bears debut - 247Sports

It is Justin Fields time in Chicago. The Bears’ first-round draft pick shined in his preseason debut against Miami. Fields was 14 of 20 for 142 yards and a touchdown while adding 33 rushing yards and a rushing touchdown. After trailing by 13, Fields rallied the Bears to a 20-13 win.

But head coach Matt Nagy believes this is just the first step in the process.

"Everybody here is super excited about the way he played today,” Nagy told reporters in Saturday's postgame press conference. "We all want the same thing. We understand the buzz. We understand the excitement. That’s why we drafted him. But we want to make sure that we go through this thing and we understand the process. It’s one game and the beautiful thing is that we get more practices and he gets to come back next week against Buffalo and he’s going to have another chance.”

Early in his debut, Fields looked a little shaky. Tight end Jesse James fell down which caused Fields to nearly throw an interception. On the very next play, Fields fumbled trying to spin away from a defender. The Bears didn’t get a first down until the 27-second mark in the second quarter. But the former Ohio State star settled in quickly to start the second half.

Miami’s secondary is widely regarded as one of the best in the NFL. They blanketed Fields’ target. But Fields was at his best in the open field. He made the Dolphins pay for losing contain. He used his arm and legs to march right down the field on the opening drive of the second half. His eight-yard touchdown run trimmed Miami’s 10-point halftime lead to just 13-10.

"When we watch the tape tomorrow, there’s going to be guys that shine and guys that can get better,” Nagy said. "I totally understand the buzz and the excitement and we feel it too.”

On the very next drive, Fields diced the Miami defense with a big 21-yard scramble. He followed it up with a 30-yard touchdown pass to a wide-open James down the sideline.

Veteran Andy Dalton was the QB1 for the Bears on Saturday. Dalton played the first two series, completing 2 of 4 passes for 18 yards. But Fields lived up to the hype in his debut.

“Again, what’s the ultimate goal for this offense? Score touchdowns,” Nagy said. "So keep leading the team down. Keep getting firsts downs. Keep getting touchdowns. Let us see the why's behind everything. Why did that happen? And the more thing you have things happen because of that player, being Justin (Fields) or being Andy (Dalton) or being (David) Montgomery, we know that we see that. And it makes it hard on us. Ultimately, we’re going to do what’s best for the Chicago Bears.

"Here we are in Week 1. We all understand that it was a great first day for Justin, he did awesome. We love that. And now let’s put it together and let’s keep working and let’s keep improving and let’s stay consistent with it. Let’s take it into the next game when you’re back out there. We also understand that the guys who didn’t play very much, they want to play a little bit more, and do their thing, and we’re looking for the identity of this offense and how we get to be the best we can be."
