"Bubble, Bunny, Minotaur" will be at the Victoria Fine Arts Center August 13 & August 14

VICTORIA, Texas – Here Be Monsters returns to the stage.  Leaders of the local theatre collaborative joined us on Community Crossroads to talk about their return to the stage.

The following is a transcript:

Carolina Astrain: Welcome to Community Crossroads. We’re now joined by Randy Wachtel and Nina Di Leo of theater collaborative, Here Be Monsters, welcome to Community Crossroads.

Wachtel and Di Leo: Thank you.

Astrain: I wanted to look at some past productions. Y’all know I’m a big fan of the Here Be Monsters theatre collaborative. I think this is Neptune’s chamber? I forget what this was called.

Nina Di Leo: Yeah. Poseidon. Written by Pollard. Randy Pollard is Poseidon.

Astrain: And this is from Lobster Bisque.

Di Leo: That’s right. Yeah. You were a part of that production if I remember correctly.

Astrain: Well, it was such a great opportunity to be a part of a local theater group with original works.

Di Leo: Yeah. That is one thing that we really try to do is to make sure we’re also doing the writing. So it’s a collaborative where we really all take on different roles. So we do the acting, the directing, the production, it’s all-encompassing.

Wachtel: Yeah. From, from the get-go ground up, so to speak. We do all of it.

Astrain: And so talk to us about this show’s theme in particular “Bubble, Bunny, Minotaur.” Wow. What a combo!

Di Leo: What is the title might tell you there isn’t really a thing to see here. Um, but it is a great mix. So we always try to do, uh, pieces of different genres. So we have kind of a fun rom-com that, that Randy’s in with a wonderful actor Meaghan MacKenzie-Rolfe. That’s really fun. He’s directing a wonderfully absurd.

Wachtel: Very kooky. Fun. A six-foot rabbit. That’s always a good time. Yes.

Here Be Monsters returns to the stage

WHEN: 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday, August 13 and August 14

WHERE: Victoria Fine Arts Center, 1002 Sam Houston Dr, Victoria, TX 77901

COST: Admission is free, go here to reserve your seat.

Astrain: So hence the VISD Fine Arts Center is the venue.

Wachtel: Yes. Well, we normally do the last several shows we’ve done over at the Five Points Museum, which we love Five Points. They’ve been very gracious to us in every regard.

This year, of course, was a struggle. Are we going to be able to do this or we’re going to have an audience, et cetera? And by the time we all synced it up and figured it out and the same with the museum, the schedules just didn’t align. So we did our second show slumber at the center, which was five years ago. So it’s time to revisit and it’s a unique facility for us in this regard because we bring the audience on stage with us instead of using the facility, as it’s built as a premium, we closed the main drape. We put the audience on stage with us for a very intimate experience. Very unique.

Astrain: Is this what’s happening again this year with a “Bubble, Bunny, Minotaur?”

Wachtel: Yes, ma’am.

Astrain: Wow.

Di Leo: Everybody’s on stage.

Astrain: What a cool intimate experience.

Wachtel: It really is. I’m not sure there’s anything else like it in Victoria and you know, we, every time we stage a show, we tend to do it a little bit different, whether it’s in the round ….left right in the glass bubble over at the museum. So it’s always fun for us, I think, to come into a space and try to utilize it in a different way.

Astrain: And there are several short plays, correct?

Di Leo: Yeah. Yes. So, and again, it’s really all kinds of different genres. We, um, we’re in kind of a heavy family drama, so, and there are a few, a few adult themes, um, mostly coming from you.

Wachtel: Well there is one piece in particular that I’m looking forward to that has adult theme and has some strong language, probably not good for the kiddos, but for the most part, a lot of laughter, a lot of fun, but there’s one piece that’s dark and heavy.

Admission is free but donations are welcome

Astrain: After going all digital last summer with the production, what’s it like being back in person?

Di Leo: It’s wonderful.

Wachtel: Fantastic. Yeah. Looking very forward to the energy of an audience and people in front of us.

Di Leo: That’s really what a performance is. I mean, we were proud to continue last year and try to do something online. And that project is something that we’ll remember, but this is, this is what we’re about to be on stage together.

Astrain: And y’all are both very busy individuals. I know Randy’s with the school district, Nina, you’re the head of the Victoria Bach Festival. How do you find time and why do you find time to do this?

Wachtel: Well, it’s a creative outlet. Speaking for myself, I love theater. Um, I love just the creative energy that’s involved in all of it and meeting Nina and this whole idea of let’s write our own material on stage. I had never done that before and I love it. It’s a lot of work, but it’s very satisfying to do your own thing and to get a response from the audience and to share that, uh, it’s just very special, but it takes a lot of time, money, energy above and beyond, you might say.

Astrain: Well, excellent. I’m going to go ahead and share everything you need to know to attend the performance. It’s at the Victoria Fine Arts Center and it’s August 13th and 14th at 8:00 p.m. and admission is free. Donations are encouraged and up next on Community Crossroads, we hear about a Back-to-School bash that’s happening in Yorktown don’t go anywhere.
