Yesterday, Microsoft revealed a rather stunning limited edition Xbox Series X|S controller, themed around the upcoming Forza Horizon 5. The special gamepad, which is available to pre-order now for $74.99, is scheduled to release alongside Playground Games and Xbox Game Studios’ new racing title on November 9, 2021.
The Forza Horizon 5 wireless controller sports a translucent 90s-throwback yellow shell, generously splattered with blue and pink splotches that bring to mind Rage 2 aesthetics or the dyed smoke at a gender reveal party. The matching thumbsticks, triggers and face buttons pick up some of the splotched coloring.
Other than the obvious eye-catching visuals, the peripheral features custom “racing-inspired” rubberized grips underneath and alongside the handles. Gamers who pick up one of these controllers will receive some exclusive (and somewhat vague) downloadable game content in the form of a Forza edition car, a cosmetic item, and a victory emote. What those digital bits exactly entail remains to be seen.

At almost $80, Forza fans will be paying a premium to own Microsoft’s shiny bit of input technology, though it’s not too extreme in terms of most modern controller prices. Especially so when considering that a pair of Nintendo Switch Joy-Cons retails for about the same amount, as does Sony’s official PS5 DualSense.
The question you’ll have to ultimately answer is: Do I really need yet another Xbox controller?
