Vuelta Stage Report: Primoz Roglič started the 2021 Vuelta a España in the same way as he finished the 2020 Spanish Grand Tour – In the red jersey. It looked like the young Astana-Premier Tech rider, Alex Aranburu would take the win, but the Olympic time trial champion came up with a storming ride for the stage and overall lead.
The first red jersey in the Vuelta a España went to Primož Roglič. The Jumbo-Visma rider won the time trial in the streets of Burgos and will start on Sunday in the leader’s jersey. Second was Alex Aranburu, third Jan Tratnik.

Technical director, Fernando Escartín: “La Vuelta 21 will take off with a prologue where differences among the favourites are expected to be minimal (no more than 10-15 seconds). Burgos will host a time trial for specialists that, as with most races held in an urban setting, will be highly technical.”

The last Grand Tour of 2021, the Vuelta a España, started late on Saturday afternoon from the cathedral in Burgos. An opening time trial of 7.1 kilometres with a nasty climb would provide the first differences in the general classification. Top favourite for the time trial and the final overall was Primož Roglič, who was also the best in Spain in 2019 and 2020. At 8.47 pm the Slovenian rolled off the starting podium as the last rider.

Before Roglič reached the finish line, 183 other riders had to finish. Starting with Pelayo Sanchez, who kicked off the Vuelta at 5:44pm and finished first, but didn’t play a significant role in the time trial. The Spaniard was soon followed by some top riders with serious target times, such as Omar Fraile (8:55) and Adam Yates (8:52). But the strongest punch in the opening phase came from Dylan van Baarle. With a time of 8:43, the Dutchman took his place in the hot seat for quite some time.

Halfway through the time trial, riders started to go under Van Baarle’s time, including Alex Aranburu (8:38) and Tom Scully (8:42). Lawson Craddock seemed to be on his way to a new top time until the last kilometre, but came up just short with 8:45. Michael Matthews also had to grit his teeth for a time of 8:46.

Towards the end of the time trial we saw more and more GC riders finish. They too were not able to improve the time of Aranburu. Aleksandr Vlasov (8:46), Sepp Kuss (8:47) and Romain Bardet (8:59) looked strong, Steven Kruijswijk (8:58) and Richard Carapaz (8:57) were among the other GC riders.

Jan Tratnik, Josef Cerny, Enric Mas, Egan Bernal and Roglič formed the final squad of the day in that order. All hoped to knock Aranburu off his throne, but in the end only the Jumbo-Visma Slovenian succeeded with a time of 8:32. Cerny (8:43) and Tratnik (8:32) finished in the top five. On Sunday Primoz Roglič will start stage 2 as leader.

Stage winner and overall leader, Primoz Roglic (Jumbo-Visma): “This is crazy. Obviously it was enough for winning. I’m pleased and happy with today’s result. A 7km effort was still super hard. It was all out from start to finish. I had nothing left when I crossed the line. I don’t know where I won it. The fact is I went fast on the uphill and I had to survive the corners. We’ll see how long I keep the red jersey. It’s a beautiful start again. I’m enjoying it. Hopefully we can enjoy leading La Vuelta with the team in the coming days. But I know how difficult it is.”
