NJSYO Marks the End of a Tumultuous Year with Dazzling Concert

The past year has been unusual, to say the least. For students especially, routines have been disrupted and in-person contact with mentors and peers has been extremely limited. Like many organizations, the New Jersey State Youth Orchestra has had to be flexible in organizing rehearsals and performances throughout the year, often having to adapt at a moment’s notice to comply with ever-changing guidelines and ensure everyone’s safety. However, the overarching goal of the NJSYO has always remained consistent: to offer young people an outstanding music education.

Given the recent challenges, the NJSYO’s end-of-season concert, held on the lawn of the Middletown Arts Center, was nothing short of outstanding. The concert featured three orchestras: the Preparatory Strings Orchestra (third to fifth grade), the Concert Youth Orchestra (middle school), and the Symphonic Youth Orchestra (high school). The concert also featured two ensembles: the Chamber Ensemble (strings) and the Chamber Winds.

Conductors Chelsey Dokus, Joseph Ciappina, Leo Soeda and Ben Ringer have traditionally chosen music designed to challenge students and truly showcase what they can do, and this year was no exception. Highlights included works by Johann Sebastian Bach, Johannes Brahms, Antonín Dvorák and Claude Debussy.

As Ringer observed, “Through a long, dark winter we kept the music going, holding out hope that this concert would become a reality. This orchestra truly can do anything we set our minds to, and this season proved it.”

Indeed, as if to celebrate both the beginning of summer and our collective emergence from an unprecedented historic moment, the concert also included a number of pop songs with an unmistakable theme: “Get Back,” “High Hopes,” “Here Comes the Sun” and “Don’t Stop Believin’.”

In closing remarks, Lakshmi Nadiminti, NJSYO Board president, and Maggie O’Brien, executive director of the Middletown Arts Center, were gratefully acknowledged for the vital role in keeping the music playing this year.

Graduating seniors Lasya Balachandran, Caroline Cinque, Michael Dews, Madeline Fields, Benjamin Lin, Leila Merhi, Isabel Papa, Ella Rosetti, Kayla Thuel, Nicholas Trerotola, Michael Tsai and Madeline Williams were recognized. As winner of Maestro Ringer’s classical music trivia contest, Papa had the special honor of conducting an excerpt of “Pomp and Circumstance” near the program’s end. And in a surprise twist, Tsai delivered a heartfelt, somewhat impromptu tribute to Ringer. Tsai expressed his admiration and appreciation for the truly special environment that is the NJSYO, an organization that he compared to a family, a “place to grow and express [a] passion [for music]” – in short, a home.
